Four flax placemats sized to hold a full setting — 34 × 46 cm takes a dinner plate with the cutlery to either side and a glass above. They soften the clatter of stoneware on a hard table and lift off to the wash when a meal gets messy, which a fixed surface can't.
The same stonewashed European flax as the napkins, pre-shrunk and in the natural flax colour, with a double-stitched hem to hold up to repeated washing. A pair reads as one set on the table.
Linen is an absorbent cloth, not a waterproof one — a mat will soak up a knocked-over glass and shield the table, but set a dripping-hot dish straight down and use a trivet or the oven-to-table bakeware, or the heat and moisture will mark through.
