A heavy marble mortar for the jobs a machine does badly — cracking whole spices, pounding garlic and salt to a paste, working herbs into a rough pesto. The weight does the work: you steady it with one hand and let the mass of the pestle break things down rather than fighting a bowl that skates around.
Cut from honed marble, sealed on the food surfaces so it resists staining far better than raw stone. The inside bowl is left with enough tooth to grip what you're grinding instead of letting it slide.
Marble is hard but not indestructible — bring the pestle down with a grinding, crushing motion rather than a hammer blow. A sharp strike against the rim can chip the stone.
